Friday 30 June saw the staging of the Nit Laus, the Laus Night, when the FAD’s Association of Graphic Designers and Art Directors, ADG-FAD, presents the ADGLaus Awards to Graphic Design and Communication of Barcelona, in a tradition that goes back more than fifty years.
ADG-FAD presented the awards during the now traditional Nit Laus, a celebration of graphic art that is a meeting point for hundreds of professionals from this sector and which has become an essential benchmark for learning about the year’s most relevant creative proposals. On this occasion, the Nit Laustook place in the outdoor auditorium of the Disseny Hub Barcelona, the association’s headquarters.
Nearly 1,100 projects were entered for the ADGLaus Awards 2017, which were founded in 1964. Of these, 225 won in five different categories: Graphic Design, Digital Design, Advertising Creativity, Audiovisuals and Students. Also awarded are the Honour Laus, the Laus Enterprises and Entities Award and the third edition of theLausAporta-FundaciónBanco Sabadell Award, which includes professional and student categories. This year saw the presentation of a total of: 1 Grand Laus, 1 Young Talent, 29 golds, 65 silvers and 129 bronzes.
The projects entered in Graphic Design, Digital Design, Advertising Creativity, Audiovisuals and Students compete in their own sections for the Bronze Laus, Silver Laus and Gold Laustrophies. Within each one of these sections, the projects recognised with a Gold Laus compete for a Grand Laus and, in the case of students, for a Young Talent. All the works entered in the Laus Awards compete together for the LausAporta-FundaciónBanco Sabadell Award.
Moreover, the ADG-FAD Board chooses two important prizes: the Honour Laus and the Lausfor Enterprises and Entities.
Honour Laus 2017: Enric Aguilera
The ADG-FAD Board decided to award the Honour Laus Award toEnric Aguilera for his contribution and professional career as the greatest exponent of packaging in the mass consumption segment, but also for his career as a graphic designer, a profile inherent to Aguilera that is often little recognized but which has marked an entire generation of designers.

This award recognizes businesses or entities with a trajectory that reflects their good relationship with design and communication. The ADG-FAD Board decided to award the Laus Enterprises and Entities Award 2017 to Camper, which has been in the footwear market for more than 40 years and was committed right from the start to a shared cultural imagery as a ground-breaking form of communication through painstaking design, image, strategy or scenario. Its communication has without a doubt made of this family company one of the most visible and highly respected Spanish brands internationally.
Grand Laus and Young Talent
The projects recognized with a Gold Laus in the different categories (Graphic Design, Digital Design, Advertising, Audiovisuals) compete for a Grand Laus and, in the Student category, for a Young Talent. The chairpersonin each category gathers their jury together to debate on the winners of the Gold Laus to assess whether one of the works deserves to be eligible for the Grand Laus. These awards require the jury’s unanimity (a maximum of one vote against). This year the winners of the Grand Laus and the Young Talent are:

The Grand Lausof this year’s ADGLausedition cannot be described with better words than those used by Albert MartínezLópez-Amor for theADGLaus 17 book: “An indispensable short for our times, containing the excesses of opera buffa, the fantasticality of magic realism, the humour of the photographs taken by Martin Parr andTxemaSalvans, the fatalism of Greek tragicomedies, the pace of a Scorsese film and many other influences that we cannot explain because we have so much theatre yet to see…”
Jury: Olga Llopis, SòniaDíaz, María Martí Vigil (winner of the Young Talent 2016), Irene Serra, Carlos Rodrigo, Albert Folch, Adrià Gómez
CHAIRWOMAN: Anna Solsona
Data analysis, maximizing the value of computer graphics and a great strategic decision are the key pillars of the project that has won the Young Talent 2017, which brings to light the great format of the publication and the journalistic basis of the design. In times of post-truth and overdoses of speculation, the meticulous restraint of the design at the service of communication is much appreciated.
Laus Aporta – Fundación Banc Sabadell

The jury is comprised of the Chairpersons in each category: Olga Pérez, Ainhoa Nagore, Albert Romagosa, Alejandro Masferrer, Anna Solsona together with Daniel Ayuso (chairman ofADG-FAD), Montserrat Corominas (deputy director of theFundación Banco Sabadell art collection).

TheLausAporta-FundaciónBanco Sabadell Award winner was chosen for the exquisite art direction at the service of many women’s empowerment. Here are the words of the Laus 2017 Book on this work: “The pages of this catalogue are filled with serenity, seduction, sophistication. With the flavour of close-knit comfort. Filled, ultimately, with an air of shelter and freedom like the islands where pirates take refuge.”

Font Del Gos, un barrio olvidado de Barcelona
TheLausAporta-FundaciónBanco Sabadell Award for Students goes to a publishing project by an IDEP student. The jury considered that giving visibility and a voice to a district forgotten by fashionable Barcelona through graphic design deserved this recognition. The design follows the maxim that less is more in favour of a brilliant conceptualization and maturity.
